James Lee III wrote a new piano concerto for Alexandra Dariescu
James Lee III, the extraordinary US composer, has written a new concerto for trailblazing pianist Alexandra Dariescu, called “Shades of Unbroken Dreams”. James wrote this concerto on this year's 60th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech and it tackles the social justice theme and explores how far we have really come in terms of diversity, equality and inclusion in our industry. This is the first piano concerto written by a Black composer in more than 30 years, which is especially significant given the 2.37% representation of Black composers on the world stage, according to Donne Foundation. The concerto is co-commissioned by the Detroit Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic.
“Although music is not there to change politics, it can influence our thinking, actions and make us reflect about our true roles in society. Let’s all have a dream for our world to be a place of limitless possibilities for positive action, change and respect for one another!” (Alexandra Dariescu)
The world premiere will be in the US with Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Fabien Gabel- 3 performances on 9, 10, 11 November 2023.
